XT30, XT60 and XT90 connectors provide compact and dependable power interfaces for LiPo batteries, FPV drones, RC models, UAVs, robots, motor-driven equipment and other DC-powered systems.

Although the three models share a similar application principle, they are designed for different combinations of power demand, connector size, cable gauge, equipment weight and installation space. Choosing the correct model requires more than matching a connector name to a current value. The complete electrical path—including the battery, wire gauge, cable length, connector contacts, solder joints, controller and operating environment—must be evaluated as one system.

King Lai provides XT30, XT60 and XT90 connectors as part of customized cable assemblies and wire harnesses. Connector gender, wire specification, cable length, branch design, opposite-end connector and protective processing can be configured according to the customer’s equipment drawings and electrical requirements.

Model options: XT30, XT60 and XT90
Service type: OEM and ODM cable assembly manufacturing
Typical applications: LiPo batteries, FPV, RC, drones, robots and industrial DC equipment

XT30 vs XT60 vs XT90: What Is the Difference?

The primary differences between XT30, XT60 and XT90 connectors are their physical size, weight, contact structure, compatible cable direction and intended power range.

XT30 is the smallest and lightest option. It is generally selected when reducing equipment size and weight is a priority.

XT60 offers a balanced design for applications that require more power capability than a compact connector while still controlling overall size and weight.

XT90 has a larger connector and contact structure. It is better suited to equipment using larger batteries, higher-power motors and heavier-gauge power cables.

XT60 connector heating is not always caused by the connector model itself. Undersized wire, excessive cable length, poor soldering, worn contacts, loose mating or multiple adapters can increase resistance in the complete power path. The connector and cable assembly should therefore be designed and tested together.

XT90 Connector for Larger Batteries and Higher-Load Systems

XT90 is intended for equipment that uses larger batteries, higher-power motors, heavier-gauge cables or higher continuous and peak loads.

Its larger physical structure provides additional design margin for demanding power systems, but it also requires more installation space and adds more weight than XT30 or XT60. It should therefore be selected based on actual electrical and mechanical requirements rather than simply choosing the largest available connector.

How to Select the Correct XT Connector

Connector selection should begin with the complete equipment requirement rather than the connector model alone.

1. Confirm Continuous and Peak Current

Identify both the normal operating current and short-duration peak current. Motors, ESCs and battery-powered actuators can draw substantially different current during startup, acceleration or temporary overload.

2. Evaluate Wire Gauge and Cable Length

Smaller wires and longer cable runs produce more resistance. Even when the connector is appropriately selected, an undersized or unnecessarily long wire can create voltage drop and heat.

3. Check Available Installation Space

XT30 is easier to install in compact equipment, while XT90 requires more room for the connector, larger wire and cable-bending radius.

4. Consider Equipment Weight

Connector and wire weight can affect FPV drones, UAVs and mobile robots. A larger connector is not automatically a better choice when weight directly affects performance or operating time.

5. Review Mating Frequency and Mechanical Stress

Equipment that is connected and disconnected frequently may require additional strain relief, protective sleeving or cable-routing support.

6. Consider Ambient Temperature and Ventilation

Electrical performance is affected by operating temperature, enclosure design and airflow. Assemblies installed in enclosed or high-temperature equipment should be evaluated under realistic conditions.

7. Validate the Complete Assembly

The final cable assembly should be checked using the actual connector, wire gauge, cable length, soldering process, load profile and installation environment.

Why the Complete Power Path Matters

A typical power system includes:

LiPo Battery → Power Cable → XT Connector → Power Cable → ESC or Controller → Motor or Equipment

The performance of the system is limited by its weakest component.

Design Issue

Possible Result

Wire gauge is too small

Voltage drop and cable heating

Cable is unnecessarily long

Increased resistance and power loss

Solder joint is poor

Localized heat and unstable performance

Contact is worn or contaminated

Increased contact resistance

Connector is undersized

Excessive temperature rise under load

Connector is oversized

Unnecessary weight, cost and space

Strain relief is insufficient

Stress on the wire and solder joint

Too many adapters are used

Additional contact points and resistance

Using an XT90 connector with an undersized cable does not make the complete system suitable for an XT90-level application. The connector, cable and termination process must be selected as one engineered assembly.
